Friday, June 10, 2011: A few storms in the coming days - warm

Friday, June 10, 2011

HEADLINE:  Warm today into the weekend (cooler by Sunday) - a bit less humid Saturday night into Sunday - especially over central and northern half of the region.  There will be on/off chances for showers and thunderstorms into the weekend.  A few thunderstorms may produce severe weather over the coming days - gusty winds and hail.

Note the slightly cooler or cooler temperatures to our north on Friday afternoon - this is the frontal boundary that will approach our region in the coming days.  This front will bring an increased chance for showers and thunderstorms and also lower dew points (it won't feel as humid behind the front).

There were over 300 record highs and record lows on Wednesday - June 8th.  Here is the map - record high temperatures are the red dots.  Blue dots are record low temperatures.  You can view the list of records by clicking here.

How much above normal will high temperatures be tomorrow?  Several degrees!  The map below shows you the departure from normal highs (normal highs are around 79-82 degrees).  For example if the normal high is 80 degrees and the actual high is 90 degrees then we would be 10 degrees above normal. There is an area of interest off the coast of Florida.  This is the disturbance we have been watching for several days now.  It continues to move north/northeast.  This will cause some squally weather in the Florida Keys and over parts of central/southern Florida.

Tropical development is not anticipated at this time.
.
You can view images of the system by clicking here  - we have a variety of satellite images available on the web-site.

.
1.  Temperatures will moderate a bit this weekend.  A frontal system will push through much of the area on Saturday and Saturday night - this will lower humidity/dew points a bit.  Making it feel a bit more comfortable outside.  Mainly over our central and northern areas.  Southern areas may remain muggy.

2.  Some thunderstorms are possible over the region in the coming days
.  Any thunderstorms that form could produce heavy rain, lightning, gusty winds, and even hail.  Some severe thunderstorms are possible in this air mass.  More isolated in nature.  We will watch for the potential of a complex of thunderstorms on Friday night over our northern counties - and then again on Saturday night and Sunday.
.

.
Drought continues to our south and southwest.  We will continue to monitor that region and the tropics for any changes.
