Yes - you may need to take shelter if severe thunderstorms and/or tornado warnings are issued.  Wind fields are very strong tonight - that means that damaging wind gusts will likely occur in some of our counties.  Remember that meteorologists can't tell you which counties will be hit by severe thunderstorms until they develop.  You will need to monitor radars and local media for the most up to date warning information.  If you feel threatened then take shelter.  Don't wait on a warning to be issued.  Storms will be moving at speeds of 50-70 miles per hour.

.
Monitor KFVS - WSIL - WPSD for the most up to date weather information via television and monitor local radio stations that you trust for weather warnings.  We have some great weather teams in our region and they will be on top of the situation as this event unfolds.

HEADLINE:
The big story today is the severe weather threat for tonight (Sunday night).  Thunderstorms will form along a cold front this evening and rapidly move east across our region.
.
Thunderstorms will likely produce damaging winds and a few tornadoes.  Hail can't be ruled out in the most intense cells - although hail is not the primary concern.

Here are the SPC storm outlook maps - the first image is the MODERATE risk zone - remember they have three levels for severe weather - slight - moderate - high.  We are currently in a moderate risk - severe weather is likely later today/tonight.
.
The above map is the tornado threat area - you can see our counties are included in the threat for tornadoes.
.
This final map is for the high wind threat - the SPC has outlined our counties for a significant risk of damaging winds.

Area residents should pay close attention to the latest watches and warnings as they are issued tonight by our local National Weather Service Office.  Report all severe weather to local law enforcement and ask them to pass it on to the National Weather Service.
.
Now is the time to review your tornado safety plans and severe weather safety plans.

Date Range: January 17th-February 10th
Event: Continued SWING pattern appears likely now.  Potential for 5-8 precipitation events.  NAO may move into neutral territory (MAYBE negative at times) - giving us the potential for a few wintry precipitation events.  Some data shows periods of WELL above normal temperatures.  Potential for some wild temperature swings in the coming weeks.  This could mean thunderstorms during the time period, as well.
Severe Risk: Possible thunderstorms
Frozen Precipitation Risk: Possibly
Details: Potential for some significant swings in the temperature pattern.
Confidence in my forecast:  Medium

.
. .
.
Remember that as a general policy, in the long range outlook, I will NOT mention severe thunderstorms more than 72 hours in advance.  I will mention thunderstorm risks and I will give as many details as possible.  The word severe will be reserved for the short range forecast.

-----------------------------
.
1.  Another system takes aim at our region towards the middle of the week with heavy rain possible.  The concentration for this update is on the severe weather event for Sunday night.
.
Now is a GREAT time to buy a NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio.  Better to have one before storms strike than to be without one during an event.  I recommend the Midland Model 300 NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio - that is what I use here at my house!
