May 5, 2011: Chance rain Thursday night and again Saturday - warmer ahead

Thursday, May 05, 2011

.
THANK YOU EVERYONE for all the help in our local communities - you are truly heroes!
.

We have a chance for showers and storms tonight (Thursday night) and again on Saturday - then we enter a much warmer and more humid pattern from Sunday into the end of next week.
.
The Video Weather Briefing has been updated - click here to view the video
.
Rivers will be slow to fall in the coming days.  There will continue to be pressure on the levee systems.  This is, of course, a concern.
.
We will need to closely monitor thunderstorm chances as we enter next week - any disturbance in this pattern could easily trigger strong to severe thunderstorms.  Perhaps the most organized period of storm chances will arrive on Tuesday and again towards next Thursday and Friday.
.
CAPE next week - remember CAPE is basically the amount of energy in the atmosphere - will be quite high from Sunday into next Friday.  CAPE without a trigger though will not bring any problems.  In order for that energy to be used you will need a focal point for thunderstorms - a cold front or disturbance in the atmosphere.  IF we do have a focal point then we will have to monitor the risk for heavy rain, large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.  Right now there is a lot of uncertainty on the timing of disturbances next week.
.
I am leaning towards Tuesday for one focal point of showers and thunderstorms.  Then I am leaning towards the Thursday/Friday time frame for another chance of storms.
.
Several thunderstorm complexes are likely to form across portions of Kansas and Nebraska next week and they will move along the warm front which will likely stretch into parts of Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois.  Where these storms track (most likely to our north) there will be a risk for heavy rain.
.
One thing is for certain - much warmer and more humid conditions will prevail across our region next week.

A cool start to Thursday morning but temperatures should rebound into the 60s during the afternoon hours.  We will have a chance for rain (rainfall of less than 0.25-0.30") on Thursday night as a small disturbance passes through the region.

Continued flooding.  Concern will increase with each passing day that the strain on levees could cause some to break.  Be prepared for flash flooding in the event of a levee breach.  Have life jackets and other emergency supplies ready for immediate deployment in the event of a breach.

Thursday, during the day, will be dry.  A chance Thursday night of a brief period of showers and storms.  1-2 hours in duration - IF they form at all.  Precipitation would total less than 0.40".

Snake bites - a number of people have reported snakes escaping the flood waters and moving into areas they are normally not seen.

Let's take a look at the future-cast radar from Wright-Weather.com - this is mainly for Thursday night into early Friday morning - note how the line starts out strong but then diminishes.
.

You can click the image for real size.  This first image is for late Thursday afternoon.  You can see the line of showers and storms forming to our west.  This is not going to be a heavy rain event.

.

This next image is for the 7-9 pm time frame - Thursday night.  You can see the future cast radar is showing an area of showers and storms.  Again - not expected to last long or be heavy.

1. Another shot at some showers and storms on Saturday - storms are not forecast to be severe.  We will have to update the forecast on rainfall totals.  Right now I am thinking this will not be a heavy rain event and would likely be less than 0.40" - again, I will update the Saturday rain chances as more data arrives.

.
Here is the future-cast radar for Saturday.  You can see an area of showers and storms moving across the area.  Again - I will update this part of the forecast as it becomes more clear.
.

2.  An unsettled weather pattern next week.  A chance for some thunderstorms on Tuesday and again later next week - some of the storms could be severe.  Temperatures and dew points will be on the rise next week with highs likely in the 80s and dew points in the 60s and 70s.  It will, at times, feel muggy next week.

.
3.  A chance for severe thunderstorms with heavy rain next Thursday into Saturday.  Will need to fine tune this part of the forecast.
.
Here is the new 6-10 day outlook - this is for next Monday into the next week - temperature map first and precipitation map second.  Basically this is a probability map - meaning this is the chance of it being warmer and cooler than normal and wetter or drier than normal.
