May 14, 2011: Coolish weather - showery - severe chances late next week

Saturday 14, 2011
.
.
The weekend has arrived!   Unfortunately, it will bring a chance for showers and much cooler temperatures.  We are about to flip to the opposite side of the temperature coin - after a week of warm weather - now we will have 5-6 days of cooler weather.
.
Just how much below normal will the temperatures be later this weekend into early next week?  Here is a temperature departure map for Monday - you can see that temperatures will be anywhere from 10-20 degrees below normal.  Keep in mind that normal high temperatures for this time of the year are in the middle 70s.
.

.
A cold front was moving through the region - as of this writing (Friday night).  Showers and locally severe thunderstorms were associated with the cold front.  Shower chances will continue into Monday.
.
Here is a satellite view of the storm system - Friday evening.  The bright colors are cold cloud tops indicated thunderstorms.  You can view all of our satellites by clicking here
.

.
Although there will be shower chances all weekend - it won't rain all weekend.  The showers will be scattered in nature.  With the cold air aloft there could even be some small hail with any heavier cells that form.
.
Rainfall totals from Friday night into Monday should be in the 0.25-0.75".
.
The next weather system, of concern, will arrive around next Thursday and Friday.  Can't rule out severe thunderstorms with that system in or near our region.
.
The exact placement of severe weather, late next week, will depend on the track of the area of low pressure.  If the low tracks south of our counties then the severe weather threat will remain mostly to our south.  Further north and we will have severe storms.
.
Active weather may continue into the end of the month - with several shots at severe weather.  Stay tuned.

1. Cooler to much cooler weather is likely this coming weekend into part of next week - showers will be possible on Saturday into Monday.
.
2.  Severe weather chances may increase again around May 20th-31st.  A more "spring like" storm system will bring several days of severe weather to the central and eastern United States.  Potential for hail, high winds, and tornadoes.  I will have to fine tune the forecast - long way off but stay tuned.
.
My forecast has been for a busy end of May into June for severe weather.  I continue with those same thoughts.
.
Here is a graphic from www.wright-weather.com showing the storm system next Friday - you can see the area of low pressure near our region.
.
There will likely be a tornado threat late next week somewhere in the Mississippi Valley.  Click image for larger size.

Taking a look at the latest 6-10 day and 8-10 day precipitation outlook - normal to above normal rainfall is likely late next week into the following week.  You can see the outlook dates at the top of each graphic (below the header).  Basically this is the May 18th-26th time frame.
