February 9, 2011: COLD! Then warmer weather is on the way!

February 9, 2011

Sorry for the paragraph spacing problems between Internet Explorer and Firefox - can't see to get the spacing correct on these blog updates.

11 AM Update

Snow is falling over the area.  Low visibility being reported because of the fine/small flakes filling the air.

Snowfall accumulations will be highest near the KY/TN border.  Winter storm warning for that area - otherwise a winter weather advisory for most of the area.  Snowfall near the KY/TN border will be in the 3-6" range.

Elsewhere - snow totals appear to be on track - seeing reports of 1-3" over most of the area with some pockets of heavier totals near the Missouri Bootheel and into the KY/TN border area.

Added 1"-2" to the KY/TN border county area forecast where I had 2-4".  Will increase it to 3-6". Probabilities had this covered - but will update the map to reflect these numbers.

Snow will come to an end this afternoon from west to east.

Here are my morning thoughts - bumped totals up a bit and probabilities.  We will see how this goes.

Again, best chances for the heaviest snow will be from the MO Bootheel into the KY/TN border counties.  This is the best chance for exceeding the forecast totals.  Will see how it goes.

For southern Illinois and far western Kentucky...

The forecast for severe or extreme weather risk for today, tonight, and tomorrow: None

The forecast for freezing rain, sleet, or snow today, tonight, and tomorrow:  Light snow - big story is the cold. Best chances for heaviest snow will be along the KY/TN border counties.

For far southern Illinois

Chances for less than 1" of snow 40%

Chances for 1-3" of snow 60%
Chances for 4-6" of snow 5%
Chances for greater than 6" of snow 5%

-------------------

Light snow event possible over the area on Wednesday - the big story is the cold - not the snow.  Not expecting much accumulation over northern portions of the area - Cape Girardeau to Metropolis may see a dusting to an inch or so - Missouri Bootheel into the KY/TN border area stands the best chance at seeing several inches of snow.

I will nowcast the event tomorrow morning - see how radar is shaping up.  See the probability forecat above for exact forecast details.  I am giving you the over/under chances.  Again, as always, check back for updates in the morning - we may need to revise the numbers.

Otherwise - cold weather into Saturday.  Warmer on Sunday into next week.
