February 4, 2011: ACTIVE pattern - watch for updates as this unfolds...

February 4, 2011
7 PM Update

Snow is spreading into Missouri.  The system is moving north/northeast - appears the snow will move into southern IL and westerern KY later this evening.

Widespread 1-2" snow - with some pockets of 3".

A winter weather advisory continues for our local counties for 1-3" of snow.  Some slick roads are expected.

No changes to the extended forecast - I will look over tonights data and update the Sunday/Monday event and then the potential for a bigger event towards the middle of next week.  Track will be key for that event - either way very cold air will move into the region next week.  With or without the snow!

Very high confidence in the event - category 1 winter storm.

Snow is on its way - widespread 1-3" across the region.  You can see this 3 pm radar image grab - snow and sleet across the southlands.  This is spreading north and east.  I am expecting all snow for our local counties.  Click images for original size - you can see this same radar image by going to our radar page link - see below.

Click the above image and it will explain the snowstorm rating scale.

Bottom line it for me Beau...

Saturday -  Light snow moving out - cloudy.  Cold.  High temperatures only in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

Saturday night - Mostly cloudy.  Cold.  Lows in the middle 20s.

--------------------

A few minor events over the next few days.

The first event will move in from the southwest later today.  This will spread light snow across our counties.  A dusting to a couple of inches will be possible.

The next event will arrive on Sunday into Sunday night.  Some timing issues - will need to fine tune that part of the forecast.  Appears that a mixture of precipitation will be possible.

Another blast of arctic air will arrive later on Monday into Tuesday - followed by a possible significant winter storm towards the middle of next week - followed by yet even colder air.

There are concerns about the possibility of extreme cold next week - perhaps the coldest air of the winter season - thus far.

Stay tuned for updates on this event.  I will update the blog a few times a day (now that I am back home).
