January 21, 2011: Cold - some light snow chances this weekend...

January 21, 2011

11 AM Update

It was 5 degrees this morning here at my place in Massac County, Illinois.

Cold across the entire region.

Highs today will struggle into the 20s and lows tonight will be in the teens.

Some snow flurries are possible tonight and on Saturday over the area.  Little if any accumulation is expected.

Our next chance of precipitation will arrive on Sunday night into Monday night.  This could bring another round of accumulating snows.  At this time it appears that 1-3" of snow will be possible with the Sunday night into Monday storm system.

This storm is still several days away.  Track and intensity of the system will be key in determining our snowfall totals.

The potential is also growing for a possible winter storm over portions of eastern Kentucky next week.  Significant snows are possible if the storm tracks far enough west.
Stay tuned - I will update later this afternoon and evening.

Bottom line it for me Beau...

For southern Illinois and far western Kentucky...

The forecast for severe or extreme weather risk for today, tonight, and tomorrow: None

The forecast for freezing rain, sleet, or snow today, tonight, and tomorrow:  Freezing fog likely this morning.  A few flurries around the area - especially on Saturday.

Forecast:

Friday - Fog early - slick road conditions.  Flurries possible.  Cold.  Highs in the lower 20s.

Friday Night - Flurries possible.  Cold.  Low temperatures in the middle teens.

Saturday - A chance for flurries.  Cold.  Highs in the 20s.

Sunday - Cloudy.  Cold.  Highs in the 30s.

Sunday night - Monday - A chance for snow or mixture of snow and rain.  Some light accumulation is possible.  Thinking right now is 1-3" across portions of the area.  Again - will need to monitor storm track and fine tune this forecast.

-----------------
The area received a nice little snow event on Thursday.  Widespread 1-4" totals were reported over just about the entire area.  Some heavier snow neat the St Louis area - that always was the wild card.
Otherwise - the forecast behaved just about as expected.

Cold weather has once again invaded the region.  Temperatures this morning will be in the single digits to lower teens over the entire region.

Temperatures will remain in the teens and 20s into Saturday morning.  High temperatures will then struggle into the lower 30s on Saturday afternoon.

Some light snow or snow flurries will be possible on Saturday into Saturday night - especially over the northern portions of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois.

Little or no accumulation is expected.

A more widespread light snow event is possible on Sunday night into Monday.  At this time it appears that 1-3" of snow will be possible near our region.  This event is still several days away - so I will need to tweak the forecast in the coming days.

Otherwise - cold weather will continue!  Play it again Sam!
