January 12, 2011: COLD! Weekend storm taking shape - stay tuned

January 12, 2011

Cold night ahead of us - that is the big story.  Expect single digits in rural areas and possibly lower teens elsewhere.

Here is one of the meso-models - you can see cold cold cold tomorrow morning!  This image is from http://www.wright-weather.com/ - my choice of sites for model data!

New Winter Weather Radar - http://weatherobservatory.com/weather-radar.htm

Bottom line it for me Beau...

For southern Illinois and far western Kentucky...

The forecast for severe or extreme weather risk for today, tonight, and tomorrow: Very cold weather tonight (Wednesday night) with lows in the single digits.

The forecast for freezing rain, sleet, or snow today, tonight, and tomorrow:  Can't rule out a flurry or two around the area.  Main story is cold.

Forecast:

Wednesday - Partly cloudy and cold.  A few snow showers or flurries around.  High near 24 degrees.

Wednesday Night - Clearing and very cold.  Low temperature 5-11 degrees.  Depending on snow cover.

Thursday - Partly sunny and continued cold.  High in the middle 20s.

Snow and sleet will be possible Sunday into Tuesday - some questions on how warm it becomes - whether it changes to just plain rain or stays all frozen.

-----------------

Possible January thaw later next week?  Wild temperature swings possible.  Still plenty of cold weather to go this winter!

I am forecasting a possible precipitation event on Sunday into Tuesday - could be a mixed bag changing to rain and then back to frozen.  Another event possible later next week and a third event towards the beginning of the following week.  Lot of action to watch.  Stay tuned for updates.

Also the end of the month into the first few days of February could spell big trouble for some areas.  Snow and ice.  We need to watch this pattern - significant system is not out of the question in or near our region.
