January 16, 2011: Colder Sunday - wintry mix to rain - then snow chances later this week...

January 16, 2011

Most of the precipitation should hold off tomorrow until after it rises above freezing - still a slight chance of wintry mix in the morning.  Then all rain.

Watching a potential significant system for Wednesday night into Thursday night.  Several inches of snow will be possible in and near our region.

Here is what the GFS model is showing - still days away - but something to watch.

January 16, 2011:

Morning Update - 11 AM

WELCOME TO SUNDAY!  Hope everyone is having a great weekend.  Yesterday provided some of the "warmest" air we have seen in some time.  Upper 40s over portions of west Kentucky.  Can't complain about that - not after the last few weeks.

No real changes in the forecast.  A bit of sun mixed with clouds this morning - we will have increasing clouds through the day.

A chance for a wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and rain - possibly snow pellets late tonight and Monday morning.  Still some discussion on what time the precipitation moves into the area.  The earlier the precipitation moves in then the better chances it will be frozen.

Either way - frozen precipitation will change to all rain on Monday afternoon over our immediate local area.

The rain will continue into Monday night and then possibly change to some light snow or flurries later on Tuesday.

The best chance for accumulating snow this week would arrive on Wednesday night or Thursday.  A few inches would be possible if the storm doesn't track too far south.

There are differing opinions from the model data on how the lake week system unfolds.  I doubt we have a viable and confident forecast until Tuesday.  So - stay tuned for updates!

It does appear that much colder air will once again invade our region later this week.  Go figure!

Will monitor this potential system over the coming days.

Bottom line it for me Beau...

For southern Illinois and far western Kentucky...

The forecast for severe or extreme weather risk for today, tonight, and tomorrow: Cold weather

The forecast for freezing rain, sleet, or snow today, tonight, and tomorrow:  Wintry mix possible Monday morning changing to rain...

Forecast:

Sunday - Mostly cloudy. High temperatures in the lower to middle 30s.

Sunday Night - Cloudy with a slight chance of precipitation towards Monday morning. Lows in the upper 20s.

Monday - A chance for a mixture of light precipitation - changing to all rain. Highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

Monday night - A chance for light rain.  Lows in the upper 30s.

Tuesday - Cloudy.  A chance for rain - rain should move out in the afternoon.  Possibly ending as a little flurry or light snow shower activity over portions of the area.  High temperatures in the upper 30s.

Next chance of snow arrives on Wednesday night or Thursday.

-----------------
Temperatures on Saturday were much warmer than expected.  Anywhere from 5-9 degrees warmer.  Which was a huge forecast bust!  I forgot to come back and update the temperature forecast.  Sorry about that!  I guess I was enjoying the nice weather and paying too much attention to the Monday system.
Today will be colder.  A cold front has passed through the area.  This is ushering in colder air - at least temporarily.

Precipitation chances increase late tonight into Monday morning.  There are still questions on the timing of the precipitation.  If it moves in early enough then it will begin as sleet and snow - possible some light freezing rain.

The most likely area to see this wintry mix will be the western, southwestern, and southern portions of the area.

The precipitation will spread north and east through the day on Monday.  Temperatures will rise above freezing later on Monday - this will change everything over to rain.  Some of the higher terrain areas of southeast Missouri could stay below freezing a bit longer than other areas.

Light rain will continue into Tuesday afternoon over our area.

Colder air will return on Tuesday night and Wednesday.  Can't rule out some flurries or light snow as the colder air arrives.  However, this is not expected to be a big deal.

I continue to watch a possible winter storm threat for Wednesday night into Thursday night.  There is much uncertainty on the eventual track and intensity of this storm system.  Watch for updates.
