January 17, 2011: Morning mix changing to rain - snow chances later in the week

January 17, 2011

11 AM Update

Temperatures over the region range from the upper 20s to the upper 30s.  The coldest temperatures, at this time, are over portions of southeast Missouri.  Freezing rain has been reported in Poplar Bluff and several other reporting stations.

Meanwhile, western Kentucky and southern Illinois has warmed into the 30s.  Some freezing rain has been reported in west Kentucky.  Temperatures are expected to continue to rise in the coming hours.

Any problems with freezing rain should subside.  Here in Massac County, Illinois the temperature has risen to 35 degrees.

Rain will continue into Tuesday.

The next chance of snow will arrive on Thursday.  Still several days to watch this event.  There could be a few inches of snow over our region.

Bottom line it for me Beau...

Monday - A chance for sleet and freezing rain early this morning - changing to rain.  High temperatures around 40 degrees.

Monday night - Rain likely.  Lows in the upper 30s.

Tuesday - Cloudy.  A chance for rain - rain should move out in the afternoon.  Possibly ending as a little flurry or light snow shower activity over portions of the area.  High temperatures in the upper 30s with temperatures falling in the afternoon and evening.

Tuesday night - Breezy.  Cloudy with a chance for flurries.  Colder.  Low near 25 degrees.

-----------------
Light precipitation will move into our local counties early this morning.  Sleet, freezing rain, and rain will spread north and east through the area during the late morning and early afternoon hours.

Temperatures will rise above freezing by late morning and early afternoon.  Any frozen precipitation will change to all rain.

Rain chances will continue into Tuesday - rainfall amounts should be in the 0.30-0.50" range across our region.

The next storm system will approach our region on Thursday.  Right now it appears that some light snow will be possible over our region.  Some accumulation will be possible.

This next event is still several days away - I will update the forecast as I become more confident in the event.

Otherwise - very cold air will return to our area by the end of the week.  It is possible that we once again see temperatures dip into the single digits by Friday and Saturday.

The cold weather continues!
