January 22, 2011: Cold! Some light snow chances...

January 22, 2011:

Radar is starting to show snow spreading south and east out of Nebraska.  This snow will increase overnight across Missouri.

This will be a category one event for portions of southeast Missouri into southern Illinois and perhaps western Kentucky.  Click category information for a larger view

Click the above image for a larger view of the description of a category 1 event.

Confidence level is high for southeast Missouri and southern Illinois - especially the counties along the Mississippi River.  Confidence is less in areas closer to Indiana and northwest Kentucky.

Snow should start to spread into southeast Missouri and southern Illinois after 6 am tomorrow morning and then into parts of far western Kentucky after 9 am.  I will need to tweak the timing as the system moves in.

Current thoughts for snowfall

Farminton, Missouri 2-4"
Cape Girardeau, Missouri 1-3"
Sikeston, Missouri 1-2"
Poplar Bluff, Missouri 1-2"
Missouri Bootheel 1-2"

Mt Vernon possibly an inch or so
McLeansboro an inch or so
Carbondale/Marion 1-3"
Harrisburg 1-2"

Cairo 1-2"
Metropolis 1-2"
Vienna 1-2"

Wickliffe, Kentucky 1-2"
Paducah 1-2

1 PM Update

I have updated the video

The cold weather is here to stay.  Incredible pattern - quite rare.  Especially two years in a row.  Almost every winter forecast has busted.  No let up in the cold pattern in the near term.  Winter will continue!

GOOD MORNING!

No changes in my forecast from the last few days.

Snow will move in late tonight and Sunday morning - it will spread from the northwest towards the southeast.

Snowfall accumulations of 1-3" are likely over southeast MO, southern IL, and western KY.  The best chance for accumulations will be over southeast MO and southern IL.  Then chances go down a bit as you move further southeast in the area.

Right now it appears 2-4" for Farmington, MO
Mt Vernon - 1 or 2"
Marion/Carbondale 1-3"
Cape Girardea 1-3"
Paducah 1-2"
Cairo 1-3"
Sikeston 1-3"
Poplar Bluff 1-2"
Evansville, IN Dusting to an inch
Mayfield, KY 1-2"
Murray, KY - perhaps an inch or two
Madisonville and Hopkinsville, KY  - little less confident in this area - perhaps an inch or two
Bowling Green, KY Possibly some light accumulation (more likely west of there)
Bootheel of Missouri 1-2"
Northwest Tennessee perhaps an inch or two - less condifent in this area of the region

That gives you a general idea and you can draw it out from there

Will be watching the next storm system as we move into Tuesday/Wednesday.  Still too early to make a call on that event.

This mid-week storm appears mainly an event for eastern Kentucky.  However, we will need to monitor the storm track.  If the storm were to track just a little further west then it could spell big big problems for central and eastern Kentucky with heavy snow.

Stay tuned
Have a great weekend

Bottom line it for me Beau...

For southern Illinois and far western Kentucky...

The forecast for severe or extreme weather risk for today, tonight, and tomorrow: None

The forecast for freezing rain, sleet, or snow today, tonight, and tomorrow:  A few flurries around the area - especially on Saturday.  Chance for snow Sunday afternoon into Monday.

Forecast:

Saturday - A chance for flurries.  Cold.  Highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

Saturday night - Mostly cloudy.  Cold.  Lows in the lower 20s.

Sunday - Cloudy - a chance for light snow late in the day.  Cold.  Highs in the 30s.

Sunday night - Monday - A chance for snow or mixture of snow and rain.  Some light accumulation is possible.  Thinking right now is 1-3" across portions of the area.  Again - will need to monitor storm track and fine tune this forecast.

Watch the new video for more details on our potential snow event.
Best chance for accumulating snow will be on Sunday morning into Monday.  This is still a low confidence event.  I am not ready to increase the confidence level just yet - I will reevaluate in the morning around 10 am.
Right now I am thinking 1-3" over the area.  Again - this is low confidence.  My main concerns are the exact track of the system.
It appears the snow would begin on Sunday morning after 9 am and would end by Monday morning.  I will need to tweak the timing - I have already pushed the time up a bit.

Next system to watch would be Tuesday into Wednesday - looks like mainly an event to our east.  But we will need to monitor.

Otherwise - cold weather will continue.
