October 20, 2010:
Unsettled weather for the next two weeks (something you have not heard in months!)
Today's weather map:
Good morning everyone. Most of the region missed out on the rain yesterday. Unfortunately. A few spots did report trace amounts. We did not record any precipitation here at the Weather Observatory. We will have a better chance for precipitation as we move towards the weekend (Saturday night and Sunday) and into next week.
Best chances of rain will be over the western and northern half of our region on Saturday and then shifting eastward Saturday night and Sunday.
Over the next two weeks I would not be surprised if portions of our region received 1-2" of rainfall.
For today and tomorrow you can expect nice weather across our region. Fire danger continues to be high. So, please refrain from burning trash, grass, brush, or debris. The fire departments appreciate your efforts! Burn bans remain in effect.

I am becoming a little more concerned about the potential for some stormy weather this weekend and especially next week. Could there be severe storms somewhere in the Ohio and Tennessee Valley's? Yes - it is possible. But it is still days away. I am leaning towards an event south and east of our region (for next week). For this weekend stronger storms are expected to our west.
It is impossible to give specifics this far out. Many severe weather events come down to the finer details that aren't known until the day of an event. Details such as instability, moisture, wind fields, and placement of the area of low pressure. Check back for updates - I won't be making in calls this far out on how the severe weather unfolds - if at all.
One thing is becoming more and more clear - the pattern that we have been stuck in for months is about to change. A major mid latitude system is forecast to impact the United States early next week. The model support for this storm is high.
Here is one image from the GFS - ensembles. Basically this map is showing a significant storm for Monday-Wednesday of next week. Click for larger image.
Bottom line - changes are already on the weather map. We should start to see more frequent chances for rain in the coming weeks. We could also see a few episodes of strong storms - between this coming Saturday and Halloween weekend.
Also keeping a very close eye on the tropics - potential for development in the Caribbean.
