I am still up in northern Illinois. Very cold up here - well below zero for our overnight lows. Heading back home today.
I am watching a chance for snow Friday night into Saturday. I am thinking the potential exists for 2-4" over portions of Kentucky - to our east. Right now I am leaning for a possible light event for portions of southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee. Something in the 1-3" range.
Some uncertainties still exist above the exact track of the upper level support for this storm.
So - let's keep an eye on the track and I will tweak the forecast as needed.

The forecast for freezing rain, sleet, or snow today, tonight, and tomorrow: Will be watching for a chance of snow later on Friday and Friday night into Saturday morning. Light accumulation not out of the question. Still low confidence in this event. Stay tuned and I will update the blog accordingly.

I am watching another event for Sunday night into Tuesday. Low confidence in this event - however, it could be a bigger storm system than the models and data are showing. Something we will need to watch. Another potential system later next week, as well.
BIG cold outbreak later next week - brrrr is the word for the next 7-10 days.
Active pattern for the next 3-4 weeks.

Getting some new data in on the potential light snow event for Friday night into Saturday
Still some time to fine tune this. There are some questions as to the track of this low and intensity. However, with that said, it appears we may see 1-3" over portions of the area.
Here is the afternoon NAM model - seems to have a handle on the system. Just a question of how far west it tracks.

Good afternoon everyone!
Snow showers continue over our area. A dusting to an inch will be possible over some counties. Blowing snow, as well.
Cold temperatures for the next few nights.
We may see a light snow event on Friday night into Saturday morning. A stripe of 1-3" will be possible in some counties. We will need to fine tune that part of the forecast.
Also a bigger event is possible on Monday and Tuesday followed by more cold air.

Shorter update this morning - I am in the blizzard in northern Illinois.
I am watching a chance for snow Friday night into Saturday. Still low confidence and I am watching a larger storm for next Monday or Tuesday. I will update the blog with new information as I pull it together.

..BLIZZARD CREATING LIFE THREATENING SITUATION FOR MOTORISTS
REPORTS FROM MEDIA AND LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALLY INDICATE THAT HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES HAVE GONE OFF THE ROADS. THE GOVERNOR HAS ACTIVATED THE NATIONAL GUARD WHO ARE CURRENTLY RESCUING STRANDED MOTORISTS.
THE BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE TONIGHT...PARTICULARLY IN OPEN AREAS WHERE WHITE OUT CONDITIONS WILL MAKE TRAVEL IMPOSSIBLE. LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS ARE TELLING PEOPLE TO STAY OFF THE ROADS AS NOT A SINGLE ROAD IS PASSABLE IN RURAL AND OPEN AREAS. THEY ARE ASKING PEOPLE TO STAY IN A SAFE PLACE AND NOT TO LEAVE HOME TONIGHT.
THIS IS A POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. DO NOT TRAVEL UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY OVERNIGHT.

Anyone with travel plans into the winter storm zone should consider canceling their plans. The NWS and other emergency agencies are asking people to not travel into these areas at this time. They need some time to clean up the roads.
My nephew has been called up for the National Guard to help in Illinois.

February 1, 2011: Major winter storm impacting central U.S.

No major changes in the forecast - this storm is on track, as expected. The borderline counties continue to be the main concern - where the winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings are currently in effect.
I am in Bloomington,, Illinois to cover the blizzard - I will be posting photos on my weather Facebook page.
This event continues to unfold - I am still forecasting Kentucky to remain mostly rain. It may change to a mix or snow at the very end with little accumulation. Far southern Illinois should remain rain, as well.
Some thunderstorms are also possible. Isolated severe.
Portions of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri will have everything from freezing rain, sleet, snow, and rain - depending on your location. Please check your local forecast here - insert your zip code
Anyone with travel plans into the winter storm zone should consider canceling their plans. The NWS and other emergency agencies are asking people to not travel into these areas.
